Background

  • Benzonatate is a non-narcotic oral cough suppressant.

  • Current formulations of benzonatate, if released in the mouth, can cause oropharyngeal anesthesia that may lead to choking.

  • This new formulation preserves the advantages of the drug while eliminating the hazards associated with the current formula

  • Using the ion exchange resin technology eliminates the choking hazard by not allowing release of drug in the oral cavity

  • Both a strong acid resin as well as a weak acid resin can be used

  • This formula can be used for both immediate and extended release
